Parent and Caregiver Training Programs That Help Attachment Disorders
Another common intervention that parents and caregivers can use to treat children with attachment disorders are parent training programs such as
- Parent-Children Interaction Therapy
- Behaviour Management Therapy
- Incredible Years Program
Behaviour Management Training (BMT):
BMT is a psychotherapy treatment program that is designed to help parents and caregivers learn psychoeducation regarding a child's misbehaviour, teach parenting skills that are used to develop and boost compliance, decrease disruptive behaviours, and develop overall better behaviours at school with home based reward systems. (Buckne, J. &., 2008)
"In addition, BMT comprises components identified in a recent meta-analysis to be associated with better outcomes among attachment-based therapies, including being time limited, goal directed, behaviourally oriented, and concerned with parental participation" (Buckne, J. &., 2008)
The Incredible Years Program:
This is an evidence based program created to help teach parents how to break the negative parent-child interaction cycle. This is an multifaceted and developmental curriculum for parents and care-givers that focuses on cognitive social learning theory, which teaches parents how to model positive behaviours around their children, deal with misbehaviour, and demonstrate appropriate discipline and positive problem-solving. All of this combined, will help children to develop social competence, emotional regulation, and reduce aggressive behaviour. Educating parents on Bandura's modelling and self-efficacy theories through a digital format that discusses and demonstrates appropriate interactions and behaviours. The parenting program explains Piaget's cognitive development theory, which maintains that children learn best from participating in their environment, as it helps children to develop an understanding of the world around them. Finally, this program will also educate parents and care-givers cognitive strategies for the children to manage their anger, and depression. (Youth.Gov., N.D.)
"Core topic areas include parents learning effective play interaction skills and ways to strengthen their relationship with children; academic, persistence, social, and emotional coaching skills; using praise and incentives effectively; setting up predictable routines and schedules; providing adequate monitoring, and safety proofing children's homes; using limit-setting and proactive discipline strategies effectively to handle misbehaviour; and teaching children to solve problems."
